Celebrate World Oral Health Day on March 20th

Sink your teeth into dental health and wellness by celebrating World Oral Health Day on March 20th. First declared in 2007 but not fully activated until 2013, this day allows you to embrace consistent oral hygiene practices and their importance to overall wellness. With its themes and armed with help from dental health professionals, you’ll learn the many benefits of taking care of your teeth and gums. And, you’ll have fun doing it!

Dental Health and Wellness: “Say Ahh”

Launching this year, this aptly-named theme enlightens you on correlations between maintaining strong oral care habits and your general wellbeing. The phrase you often hear during a dentist visit, “Say Ahh” reminds you that your mouth serves as a mirror to the body and greater oral care offers a clearer reflection of your overall health.

According to the World Dental Federation, 90% of the world’s population will suffer from an oral disease at some point in time. Traits of an oral disease are connected in some way with noncommunicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even some cancers.

Through the sub-theme, Think Mouth, Think Health, you will understand that there is much more to oral health than having a nice smile. Whether you’re young or old, developing strong oral care habits keeps the plaque and gingivitis away and makes you want to smile each day. Your self-confidence and personal exchanges will be boosted by maintaining dental health, and on World Oral Health Day, you will be encouraged on how to go about that maintenance.

Those pearly whites won’t shine forever, but you can keep them sparkling over the long haul through increased support from your dental team at Premier Dental. Furthermore, by scheduling visits to see Dr. Caye every 6 months for prevention, detection and treatment will help spot these issues at earlier times.

Dental Health and Wellness: “Think Mouth, Think Health”

On World Dental Health Day, FDI World Dental Federation carried out a world survey about children’s oral health. Parents of children 18 or under were contacted from 10 different countries and this is what they learned:

  • Only 13% of parents took their child to the dentist before their first birthday; the recommended age for a first dental visit is before the 1st birthday.
  • 50% of parents who had taken their child to the dentist said it was for a regular check-up.
  • 29% of parents went to the dentist due to pain or discomfort in their child’s mouth.
  • 43% of parents said that they personally ensured their child’s teeth were brushed before bed time to avoid oral disease.
  • 38% of parents said they limited sugary foods and drinks in their child’s diet to avoid oral disease.
  • Only 26% of parents reported to have personally cleaned their child’s teeth from as soon as the first tooth pushed out.

Tips for Children’s Good Oral Health:

  1. Have Regular Dental Check-Ups no later than the first birthday
  2. Practice Good Oral Care, especially before going to bed
  3. Eat a Health Diet that is low in sugar and salt
